Although it has been a while since I posted on this blog, you will notice that there is a lot new at Civil War Cycling. What follows is a summary of the highlights.
Sitewide Structural Edits
First and foremost, I rewrote and restructured our Gettysburg Study Notes for a simpler, more modern presentation. This included a site-wide upgrade in web styling and reduced dependency on non-standard software enhancements.
Additions to our Annotated Bibliographies
New books about the U.S. Civil War continue to be published. In large measure, I believe that I have identified and commented on a good many of those associated with the topical headings on the following pages:
New Content—Orders of Battle
I added hyperlinked versions of the Federal and Confederate Orders of Battle for Gettysburg. These new pages include tables of contents, internal page navigation links, indexes for artillery and state affiliation, and external links to the Official Records (for officer reports), Soldiers and Sailors Database (for unit histories), Wikipedia (for biographies), and the American Battlefield Trust (for articles). They also include portrait and monument photo links to the Civil War Cycling gallery, as well as links to quizzes on commanders’ direct reports.
- Army of the Potomac (with hyperlinks!)
- Army of Northern Virginia (with hyperlinks!)
- Army of the Potomac, by state (with hyperlinks!)
- Army of Northern Virginia, by state (with hyperlinks!)
New Content—Reports in the Official Records
Published in 1889 by the U.S. government, the Official Records has the formal title, The War of Rebellion: A Compilation of the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies. Recently, Civil War Cycling created two sets of hyperlinked indexes to ease your online reading of the Official Records for the Gettysburg Campaign:
Officer Reports—Index to Vol. 27 Pt. 1
- Reports By Number (Nos. 1-378, Army of the Potomac)
- Reports By Officer Name (Army of the Potomac)
Officer Reports—Index to Vol. 27 Pt. 2
- Reports By Number
- Nos. 379-423, Supporting Federal armies
- Nos. 424-589, Confederate Army of Northern Virginia
- Reports By Officer Name (Army of Northern Virginia)
For a taste of the Official Records, try these excerpts from Civil War Cycling indexes, which link to 1889 documents scanned by Cornell University Library and delivered electronically by HathiTrust:
No. 35.—Lieut. Col. Rufus R. Dawes, Sixth Wisconsin Infantry. (OR 27,1:275-278)
No. 71.—Col. Charles S. Wainwright, First New York Light Artillery, commanding Artillery Brigade, First Army Corps. (OR 27,1:354-359)
No. 513.—Brig. Gen. Alfred Iverson, C. S. Army, commanding brigade. (OR 27,2:578-581)
No. 534.—Lieut. Gen. Ambrose P. Hill, C. S. Army, commanding Third Army Corps. (OR 27,2:606-609)
New Cycling Adventures
I have been back to Gettysburg several times since the global pandemic made traveling difficult. Then came the 18-month-long National Park Service rehabilitation work in Devil’s Den and Little Round Top. Thankfully, that has completed, and it looks great. I hope soon to post photos on this website (since my habit has been to post to Facebook while at a battlefield site).
Happy Cycling!
