How to Find Gettysburg Official Records

The following hyperlinked indexes into Volume 27 Part 2 provide quick access to Gettysburg Confederate (and some Federal) officer reports:

At 1118 pages, OR Volume 27 Part 2 begins with 45 Federal reports (support to the Army of the Potomac), followed by 166 Confederate reports for Gen. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia.

Are you looking for hyperlinked indexes to the Federal officer reports about the Battle of Gettysburg? See our “by number” and “by name” indexes for OR Volume 27 Part 1.

How to Read Confederate Officer Reports

Click on a report number or officer name to open and read a scanned digital copy of that officer’s Gettysburg report. Cornell University Library created the scanned copy that HathiTrust delivers to your reading device.

HathiTrust pages may not load as fast as you expect due to the behavior of external systems. Please be patient with the technology.

Gettysburg Officer Reports in OR Vol. 27, Part 2:

Background to Gettysburg Official Records

Published in 1889 by the U.S. government, the OR consists of 128 volumes and has the formal title, The War of Rebellion: A Compilation of the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies. Scanned and searchable pages of the complete OR is available online through the HathiTrust of Cornell University Library. For the Battle of Gettysburg, see Volume 27 Part 1 and Volume 27 Part 2. Also, a publishing company named Savas Beatie sells copies of the Gettysburg Official Records as a three-volume hardcover cloth set (where Part 3 is the Gettysburg Correspondence) available at this publisher link.

Nevertheless, the OR remains difficult to navigate largely due to the sheer mass of material and publishers’ legitimate goal to preserve and distribute—not change—a government publication. We can summarize the challenge as follows. First, the online (HathiTrust) and printed (Savas Beatie) publications do not provide a “table of contents” that lists each officer report and its associated page number. Second, although each published OR volume has an index in its back pages, there is no single-purpose apparatus to lookup an officer report by name or number. The deficiency prompts us to call this Civil War Cycling page both a “table of contents” and an “index,” since it functions as both.

Civil War Cycling Indexes: Objective and Scope

This Civil War Cycling page, “Gettysburg Confederate Officer Reports—Index to Vol. 27 Pt. 2,” provides online readers convenient access to the OR without changing the original text. Our goal is to overcome the challenges associated with finding specific officer reports amongst thousands of pages of text embedded in 128 volumes (three of which cover the Gettysburg Campaign).

You can find reports by an officer’s last name (A-Z) or by report number (379-589). For more casual readers, you do not need even that—simply scan our index listings and click a named link. A second Civil War Cycling web page does the same for Volume 27 Part 1, Report Nos. 1-378 (click here), where you will find Federal reports.

Please note that Civil War Cycling limits the scope of its OR indexes to “Reports” only—not “Communications,” “Correspondence,” “Mentions,” or other documents included in the original OR volumes.

For the Battle of Gettysburg, this is an alphabetical list of the official reports of Confederate officers only. Please note that OR 27,2 begins with a set of Federal officer reports, but they pertain to Gettysburg Campaign actions outside the scope of the battle itself. For that reason, Federal officer names are not included in the following alphabetized list. You can access those reports by number (see Report Nos. 379 to 423, above).

The names and titles in the following list are taken directly from the Official Records without edits and are in the public domain.
