GNMP Route 12 Map for a 5.2-mile historic bike tour of East Cavalry Field, Gettysburg National Military Park.
“East Cavalry Field Loop”. Formatted for download as a PDF document (not part of a GPS system).
This 7-page PDF file provides maps, bicycle cues, and monument photographs for a 5.2-mile looped tour of East Cavalry Field. Route 12 is disconnected from the main battlefield and requires travel on a heavily trafficked road and a shoulderless farm road that is narrow and winding. Therefore, Route 12 is for expert bicyclists only. The route may appeal to people who have previously toured the main battlefield and want to visit this infrequently visited area. Plan for about 1 hour, including stops and breaks.
This short, simple 5.2-mile route through East Cavalry Field is simple to describe but extremely difficult to ride due to heavily trafficked commercial and farm roads. Even the park roads are difficult, since they are technically two-way but cannot accomodate two-way traffic. For these reasons, Route 12 is for expert bicyclists only.
On the other hand, this map is free, so you may want to download it, if only to view a few interesting photos, along with some monument references to sections of the guidebook. And like all of Civil War Cycling’s companion maps, you will find other bonus material, like high-level maps of Soldiers’ National Cemetery and downtown Gettysburg.
This map is an optional digital companion to the much larger 286-page paperback guidebook by Sue Thibodeau, Bicycling Gettysburg National Battlefield: The Cyclist’s Civil War Travel Guide (Victor, NY: Civil War Cycling, 2019). ISBN 978-1-7326038-0-6. Available on Amazon (paid link).
